Kalpana Kotagal is a Civil Rights & Employment Litigation partner at Cohen Milstein and the chairwoman of the firm’s Hiring and Diversity Committee. Ms. Kotagal is co-author of the "Inclusion Rider," referenced by Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand in her 2018 Best Actress acceptance speech, a contract clause aimed to build greater diversity in the film and television industry. Since earning her law degree, cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005 she has invested great energy in championing equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace, as well as becoming a highly-respected lawyer. She has received numerous awards for her work, including “Elite Women of the Plaintiffs Bar” by The National Law Journal. In May 2018, the University of California, Irvine School of Law School, invited Ms. Kotagal to give the commencement speech to its graduating class. More recently, Harvard Law School selected Ms. Kotagal as a Wasserstein Public Interest Fellow (2018 – 2019) to advise its law students on pursuing their careers with authenticity and integrity. Ms. Kotagal chairs the governance committee of the Board of Directors of CISV USA, an international youth-empowerment and peace education organization with more than 20 chapters in the United States.
